Was that an expressionist film?. I`ve studied expressionism and knew Conrad to star in one expressionist film (Caligary) maybe Caligary wasn`t the only one, I guess

Connie was a major star of the German Expressionism, of the German silent cinema, in general. Watch him in Der Gang in die Nacht, The Hands of Orlac, Waxworks, Student of Prague, Lucrezia Borgia, The Indian Tomb, and so many others...

Wow, magnificent. He had such screen presence. Monica, have you ever read where Conrad discussed going from silent film to talkies? I know many actors had an awful time with that and it ended some careers. Fortunately not Conrad's. I am just interested to know if he ever spoke of this as he was one of the few successful in both genres.

Connie wrote and published his memoires in 2 newspapers in the 1930's. He said that during the filming of The Magician/The Last Performance, "the earthquake" hit Hollywood. Not the real one, but the talkies. He wasn't afraid of his lack of success because of his voice - which, he admitted, was professional, as he trained himself in theatres. He was afraid that he wouldn't adapt himself to the new situation in Hollywood, because he didn't speak English. Connie also wrote a journal in the 1920's, and someone might help me get a copy of it, so I could make the translation from German into English, and even publish it for you, the other fans, on the website. But, it will take some time...

That is just a way powerful performance. I certainly hope that these films are being safeguarded. We just can NOT afford to lose this.
