Welcome to the Conrad Veidt Proboards Forum! Here we discuss our common love and admiration for one of Germany's, Britain's and Hollywood's greatest actors - Conrad Veidt. Connie (as he was called by his friends and colleagues) was best known to the movie public as Major Strasser in the film "Casablanca" but as also known for his first film role as Cesare the somnambulist in what is considered the first horror film in history "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" He was born on January 22, 1893 and initially studied to become a surgeon until, in Connie's own words, ". . .gradually my desire was blunted by a keener - and secret - wish to become an actor." He is one of the greats that history took away from us too soon, succumbing to a heart attack while playing golf with his friends on April 3, 1943. For those of us who appreciation the smooth, suave and subtle European style of our beloved Connie and who see his playing roles that represent the most cold hearted rotten examples of scum to walk the planet and think 'Oh he couldn't possibly be like that for real! Gosh, I wonder what he was like when the cameras were off?" You have found a home. Welcome to this intellectual space where there is to be found much lively discussion about a lively character whom we were lucky enough to have once graced this world and through his work, still graces our lives.

Nice introduction.. I know Mary Ellen from my own board dedicated to Peter Lorre (www.lorresburg.proboards.com). In fact I helped her with this board in some way Btw. Peter and Conrad Veidt were a great team at ping-pong games ;D

Oh yeah! I kno just a little about Conrad but yet in my film class they were surprised to learn that the actor that played Major Strasser in Casablanca was the same one that played Cesare in Caligary and I was the one to point that out to them I also saw him in "All through the night" and he`s quite good there but I guess I saw him ebcause he used to be in the same films with Peter Lorre but I know he made other films as well

Good for you for pointing it out in class! : )

Yeah, not everyone had an remote idea of how the guy that played Cesare was called (you know, Conrad Veidt) so imagine that there`s no way they knew who the actors that played in Casablanca were (except fror Peter Lorre and Humphrey Bogart )

My name is Monica, I am a student at PR, and I am a huge fan of Connie. He is very close to my heart - just like the ideal grandfather. I started collecting many things about him, and next week, on his birthday, I am opening the website (which is still under construction, because I am in a difficult session of exams). But, you will find many, many photos - from his life and career. I will give you more details next week. For now, I can tell you, all, that the first time I was really impressed by Connie was while watching him in Dark Journey (my favourite film with him). I loved his acting, and since then, I consider him the greatest actor of all time. I started collecting his movies (I already have 30 of them), and I am still searching for the rest of them that are available. I succeeded in scanning photos of Connie from film archives and some photo agencies, and that is why the photos from my website will be watermarked (with MC - for Monique classique). But still, you will enjoy the photos, because most of my watermarks are on the corner.
That's all for now. But, expect many posts from me.
Thank you!

I am a longtime fan of Conrad Veidt who has discovered some of his non-Powell and Pressburger films from the 1930s relatively recently. I was bowled over by his subtle, moving performance in the role of the visitor to a genteel yet unhappy boarding house in The Passing of the Third Floor Back (1935). I published a blog on the TCM Movie Morlocks site about this movie this week, and included this site as one of the Online Sources for more info on Veidt's life and career. If you would like to read or comment on the piece, you are welcome to do so here: moviemorlocks.com/2011/01/26/conrad-veidt-i-am-a-wanderer/Thanks very much for letting me become a member. I hope to keep learning more about this protean actor and fascinating man.

Connie was and is an Angel. I will never forget him... I am happy that your review was commented on Vanity Fair. I am sure we can revive Connie's memory, even so many years after his birth and physical death.

Hello. Lilly here. Unlike some of you, I have no background whatsoever in film. I'm just a lover of great movies and appreciative of outstanding artists. In my view, Connie Veidt was one of the most enigmatic performers of the 20th century. His dedication to his craft was undeniable; his work a living art form and a true testament to his will to create something completely original, exciting, and fresh. This board was recommended to me by one of your current members. I won't name her; don't want to embarrass her. Either way, I'll post when I can---I work crazy hours (midwife)---but if I can't I'll try to at least pop in and see what everyone's discussing.
