Dark Journey is an exciting spy drama, combined with romance. Connie plays the role of the Baron Karl von Marwitz, captain of the German Navy. He is the Head of Section 8 (the German espionage service), and he falls in love with Madeleine Goddard (played by the very young and beautiful Vivien Leigh), who is a dressmaker, but also a rival spy of Karl, as she works for both the German, and the French espionage services. In addition to this, she has sympathies with the British, as her constant escort, before she met von Marwitz, used to be a British spy. The plot is very interesting, and full of action, but lots of scenes from the film are missing. Below, I am posting photos of the deleted scenes. I bought from England the DVD version of the film, released in 2010, and it contains 2 extra-sequences. I will post here screencaps from those scenes. Karl and Madeleine at their first dinner together at Grand Hotel. This scene existed in the original version, but it was later deleted. Madeleine and Karl at the police station, after Anatole, one of her employees, and a German spy, was killed. Karl is being greeted by an officer. In the actual version, we only see that officer going to greet the Baron, but the rest of the scene was later cut. And here are the extra-sequences from the DVD (which is absolutely superb, the quality of the picture and sound is great). First, the additional sequences from the last dinner scene of Karl and Madeleine. And the final scene, where Madeleine tells him that she will be waiting for him after he is released by the British authorities. This particular sequence was cut from other versions. Here is Karl, smiling in the boat while Madeleine is waving at him. Finally, the screencaps I made from my favourite sequences. This scene at the balcony used to be longer. In the actual version it is only 1 minute, but I found an old newspaper, and a film critic said ”Vivien Leigh and Conrad Veidt are boiling with romance in the long, long, long scene at the balcony”. The scene was cut a lot, because the song that the musicians are playing isn't the same one we hear in the actual version. And the kissing scene, which is my favourite.

Thanks for the pictures monica! I recently downloaded "Dark Journey" from archive.org and figured the video quality was what it was. Maybe I should check out the DVD to see what I've been missing. No matter what the video quality, it is still a very good picture. It's good to see Vivian Leah in her full British self. Unfortunately for poor Vivian, Scarlett O'Hara was such a powerful role for her every time she begins to speak I find I am surprised to hear a British accent because I am expected to hear a Southern one. Thanks for posting!

At ”His Co-workers” section, I posted several photos of Vivien and Connie, that were colorized by me.

Here is some interesting information about other deleted scenes from Dark Journey - excerpts from the screenplay. One of them was another romantic scene: ”Baron Karl Von Marwitz: So our pretty little dressmaker is a spy! What will people say, an officer of the Kaiser like me and a woman like you, Madeline? Madeleine Goddard: [smiling] They’ll say, the poor girl couldn’t help herself. Baron Karl Von Marwitz: [serious] One false move could mean death for both of us. But death is nothing to what I feel for you. [They kiss]”
An interogatory of Madeleine - delete scene
”Head of Fifth Bureau: [Madeline is questioned by British intelligence] You’ve had months! What can you tell us about Von Marwitz? What about the U-boat fueling operation? Madeleine Goddard: [distressed] I don’t know! Karl never talks… I mean, I haven’t got that close to him yet. The Baron is hard to know. Sometimes I wish… Head of Fifth Bureau: [Sympathetic] Rough job for a woman, pretending to be in love with a man. [pause] Head of Fifth Bureau: You *are* still pretending, aren’t you?”
A monologue of Madeleine, by the end of the film, when she was arrested and locked in the ship. ”Madeleine Goddard: [Locked in her stateroom on board ship] A spy… a life I never wanted. And now it’s over. Finished and done. So sleepy…”
The source of the info is imdb. These scenes existed in a longer version of Dark Journey.

I have a French magazine of Dark Journey (another one of my collection), which contains lots of photos (that I scanned for the website), and I read the synopsis of the film, in French. So, I discovered remarks to certain sequences that no longer exist in the actual film. For example, in the scene where Karl comes with Lupita to Madeleine's shop, Lupita is furious when she surprises Madeleine and Karl looking at each other and he holding her hand in her office, after Lupita tries on the dress. So, Lupita says she will never return to this shop a.s.o. That is why Karl apologizes to Madeleine later. So, this was one of the deleted scenes. There are mentioned certain sequences from the beginning of the film, on the ship, that no longer exist. The author of the 12-page article (entirely dedicated to the film) says that there was a vast presentation of the people who were travelling by ship, most of them spies from all over Europe. These sequences were all cut. The magazine also mentions some scenes where Karl is taking Madeleine to expensive restaurants (see the first photo above, with them 2 at Grand Hotel), night clubs and theatres! None of these scenes exist in the actual film, which means that lots of scenes from the original version were deleted.

Wow, I wonder if those sequences still exist somewhere and if there is any chance at all of an unedited version of this film. Or is this something not kept back in those days It seems that would be a travesty.

I found another magazine with a big article about Dark Journey, in which were related some interesting scenes which no longer exist, such as the discussion between Karl and Madeleine about their work, their professions, their identities (without revealing the real identities)... It is also described a scene where she feels she is falling in love with him, and also a scene at her British Intelligence Buro, where she asks to be set free from all her duties as a spy because she wants to marry Karl! Could you imagine - if all these scenes existed just like the old article says, they would change the movie almost completely. I told you that on the DVD version I have there are 2 extra-sequences, and even if they are short, they change a lot the movie - especially the ending, which is different from the American version. I wonder where I could find the original, uncut movie...

I discovered in an old biography of the Oliviers that Dark Journey was released in Canada with an extra-reel, in order to make it more accessible to the public, which means that the movie was shown in a longer version there. I have already inquired at the Canadian Film Archive and I am waiting for their reply.

I would be interested in hearing what reply you get. My mom saw Dark Journey for the first time tonight as I re-viewed some of the movies I taped from Connie Day.
She said she found the plot confusing once Karl and Marguite revealed to each other who they were. I had to stop every now and then and explain to her what was happening.
